TOIM NEWS

In the spring of 2003, President Brian Barefoot and Provost Mike Fetters announced that effective in the fall of 2003, a new faculty division called Information Technology Management would be formed. The formation of this division acknowledges the importance of information technology in businesses and management education. Professor Donna Stoddard was selected as the division Chair.  With the addition of 9 full time Operations faculty, the division is now called the Technology, Operations and Information Management Division.

TOIM DIVISION CHAIR,  Professor DONNA STODDARD and Elizabeth Thornton, Babson's Chief Diversity Office were featured at the 2008 National Women’s Business Research Symposium in Washington, D.C.—Research to Roadmap: Accelerating the Growth and Success of Businesses Owned by Women-of-Color.  Hundreds of attendees had the opportunity to hear about the multiyear, national research effort that has engaged women of color entrepreneurs in a dialog about factors preventing them from growing their businesses, and the actions needed to meet and overcome those barriers. In November of 2005, Professor Stoddard was named to the Board of Overseers of the Boys & Girls Club, Boston at the 111th annual meeting. 

In Feb. 2004, Professor Stoddard authored Getting IT Right with Charlie Field for the Harvard Business Review.  In the spring of 2004, Prof. Stoddard was awarded a grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation for research on Minority Business Enterprises in Massachusetts and a grant from SAP for her research project "Can IT Enable Partnerships between Large Enterprises and Small Subsidiaries / Suppliers?".

MARTY ANDERSON received the graduate Thomas Kennedy Award for Teaching Excellence at Babson's Commencement, 2006.   He is currently a member of the Babson School of Executive Education Advisory Board and Faculty Director of Babson Executive Education programs. 

TOM DAVENPORT and Laurence Prusak keynoted a two-day forum, Learning to Manage with Knowledge, at the United Nations Headquarters, NYC, July 8-9, 2008.

Tom along with Bala Iyer are the authors of “Reverse Engineering Google’s Innovation Machine,” which has been selected as lead article in the April ’08 publication of the Harvard Business Review.

He has been ranked again among the Top 100 Most Influential People in IT by eWEEK and sister publications CIO Insight and Baseline.  Tom along with Professor Bala Iyer wrote the lead article in the April 2008 issue of Harvard Business Review.  He was the keynote speaker at INFORMS Practice Conference in Miami, 2006 and voted one of the top three most influential business and technolology analysts in the world by Optimize magazine in 2005. 

Tom is the founder and academic director of Working Knowledge, Process Management and Innovation and Corporate Entrepreneaurship Research Centers at Babson.  He is the author of Thinking for a Living, How to Get Better Performance and Results from Knowledge Workers, Harvard Business School Press, 2005.  His interview on "Knowledge Workers Need More Guidance" appears in the August 2005 issue of CIO Insight.com.

STEVE GORDON became the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Information Technology Case and Application Research, JITCAR. 

PJ GUINAN coached a special workshop for some 80 Year Up staff and students to boost their business relationship and networking skills.  Year Up is a non-profit that helps urban young adults ---ages 18-24—reach their professional potential. 

She received the Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence at Babson Executive Education, 2006.  She received 2 corporate grants; one from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and one from McGraw-Hill Cos., Inc to provide seed funding for an e-commerce research center at Babson.  Professor Guinan will determine the best practices around e-commerce customer interactions resulting in detailed, actionable information for managers.

SINAN ERZURUMLU joined the TOIM Division in fall of 2007.  He teaches at both the graduate and undergraduate level, with an emphasis on supply chain management and operations management.  Sinan received his PhD from Mccombs School of Business at the University of Texas in Austin where he received the Dean's Fellowship in the Dept. of Information, Risk and Operations Management for 2005-2006. 

SEBASTIAN FIXSON joined TOIM in the fall of 2007.  He teaches operations management and product development to undergraduate and graduate students.  He has taught at MIT Sloan School of Management, Univ. of Michigan's College of Engineering, and Northeastern's University School of Technological Entrepreneurship. 

BALA IYER joined the TOIM Division faculty in the fall of 2006.  He received his PhD from New York University with a minor in computer science.  His areas of expertise include Information Technology Architecture, Electronic Commerce and Information Technology Strategy. 

Professor Iyer along with Tom Davenport wrote the lead article "Reversing Engineering Google's Innovation Machine" in the April 2008 issue of the Harvard Business Review.

In 2007, Bala received the Glavin Center for Global Management Fellowship and the Society for Information Management  Advanced Practice Council Fellowship.

PAUL MULLIGAN was named one seven Babson College Blended Learning Fellows based upon teaching excellence in blended learning environments, 2006. 

JAY RAO has been promoted to full Professor.   He currently teaches in the undergraduate, MBA, and executive education programs at Babson. 

FOUNDATION MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE (FME) is a yearlong immersion course into the world of business for freshmen. In 2007, Babson First-Year Student Businesses Raised $36,000+ for Charity.
