Sinan Erzurumlu is an associate professor of technology and operations management at Babson College. His main areas of research include technology and innovation management. He takes an operational lens to startup and growth challenges, with particular attention on how operations design can manage economic incentives and guide strategic decision making, in technology development and deployment. Sinan also investigates incentive mechanism design for sustainable innovations in creating economic and social value (also known as shared value).
Through collaborations with academics and practitioners, Sinan participates in applied research projects in a number of different industries including mining, food, clean tech & energy, and high tech. He uses qualitative methods, like design thinking to address new insights about a problem, and mathematical models of decision making to guide strategic decisions with rigor. His research has been published in several leading journals including Production and Operations Management, IEEE Transactions, Decision Sciences, Resources Policy, and Omega.
Sinan teaches courses on technology and operations management, technology development and deployment, environmental management, and sustainability at the undergraduate, MBA, and Executive Education programs. He values building an innovative character as the driving force for startup and growth. As such, he designs and leads workshops on the implementation of innovation initiatives for executives. Sinan was named among “The Best 40 B-School Profs Under the Age of 40” in the 2015 Poets & Quants ranking of Business School professors.
Prior to joining Babson, Sinan has worked as a project-based consultant for Dell on service operations and as a research engineer for Center for Space Research at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his PhD in Management Science and Information Systems from McCombs School of Business and M.S. in Operations Research/Industrial Engineering from Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds a B.S. in electrical and electronics engineering with distinction from Bogazici University in Turkey.
