Expertise

 

Rohit Chopra is Assistant Professor of Media Studies. His book, forthcoming from Cambria Press in 2008, examines the historical relationship between technology and nationalism in India from the colonial period onward with a focus on 'technocultural Hindu nationalism,' the use of the internet by Hindu nationalist groups to articulate new conceptions of cultural and national identity. His research interests include the historiography of media and technology in colonial and postcolonial India, the impact of new media and communication technologies such as the internet on South Asian identities, and identity politics in contemporary South Asia. Rohit has published also articles in South Asian Review, New Media and Society, First Monday, and Cultural Studies as well as book chapters in edited collections.

Rohit also writes in a journalistic capacity for Indian and American publications and runs the blog antihistory (www.antihistory.blogspot.com ). As Web Consultant, he managed several digital scholarship projects at the Emory Law School, including the Islam and Human Rights Fellowship Program (http://www.law.emory.edu/IHR) and the Future of Shari'a Project (http://www.law.emory.edu/fs). Prior to joining Emory, Rohit worked in the Indian Internet industry, at rediff.com, India's first and premier online portal. He has also worked as a copy editor in an academic publishing house, Sage India, and as a freelance journalist for various print and online publications including Sunday and rediff.com.
