Trained in anthropology, Dr. Martin has conducted multi-sited ethnographic research on the cultural logics of production in the Hollywood and Hong Kong film/TV industries in 2009. Taking both a macro and a micro perspective, Dr. Martin examined the geopolitical and socio-cultural contexts in which commercial filming occurs, with attention to the labor and social relations that occur within these two production sites as well as the transnational movements of media workers between these two historically linked production sites. Dr. Martin has published on issues of transnational film production and cultural identity, and is contributing to forthcoming edited volumes on risk and media production. Areas of expertise include media anthropology, cultural production, transnationalism, gender, and Hong Kong, China. Dr. Martin previously taught at UC Irvine and California State University, Los Angeles.
