

After leading Babson to back-to-back victories at the Caltech Holiday Classic in Pasadena, California, freshman Marcus Edwards (East Hampton, N.Y.) has been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week. A 6-foot-2 forward, Edwards averaged 14.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 3.5 steals per game while shooting 54.2 percent (13-24) from the field in Babson's two victories. On New Year's Eve, Edwards scored seven points, grabbed three boards, and recorded one steal in 25 minutes of action in a 47-43 victory over Occidental. Two days later, he shot 10-for-16 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line for a game-high 22 points to go with one block and six steals in only 22 minutes as Babson topped host Caltech, 81-42. [+]

Following a monster week in the paint, Babson first-year forward Nicole Wurdeman (Rowley, Mass.) has been selected as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Wurdeman led Babson to a second-place performance at the 2008 Bahamas Sunshine Shootout on December 19 and 20, averaging 23.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game while shooting 48.3 percent from the field and 85.0 percent from the line. In a 65-55 semifinal win over Wentworth, Wurdeman scored 19 points, grabbed seven boards, and blocked five shots while hitting 7-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the foul line. The following day, she netted 27 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field and a 13-of-15 clip from the charity stripe to go with 11 boards in an 84-75 overtime loss to Hardin-Simmons in the championship game. The Babson men's ice hockey team closed out a tough weekend at the Pathfinder Bank Oswego Classic on Saturday afternoon, as the Beavers fell to Skidmore College, 5-2, in the consolation game. With the loss, Babson dropped to 3-5-1 on the season. Junior Jason Schneider (Littleton, Mass.) and first-year Dan Ahern (Melrose, Mass.) each scored goals in defeat, while first-year Andrew Peabody (Marblehead, Mass.) finished with a career-high 42 saves in net.
