The William F. Glavin Center for Global Management was launched in 1997. It is the organization that leads Babson's international initiatives and contribution to the advancement of global management education. Through its regional institutes and global program services (GPS), the Glavin Center creates a worldwide network of partner institutions from which new intellectual capital and new experiential opportunities continually arise. Stephen A. Allen III
Professor of Strategy and International Business

Stephen A. Allen has been Professor of Strategy and International Business at Babson College since 1979. During 1996-97 he held the Walter H. Carpenter Chair. In 1997 he was appointed to the Paul and Phyllis Fireman Charitable Foundation Chair. Prior to joining Babson, he had held faculty appointments and program directorships at the Harvard Business School and IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Professor Allen’s research and course development activities focus on integrating insights from the fields of strategy, corporate finance, and entrepreneurship to improve decisions on venture development and strategic commitments in international and technology intensive situations. He teaches MBA electives on developing corporate ventures and conducts executive education programs and project consulting in this area. His current research projects focus on returns to acquisition programs and corporate venture capital funds of information technology firms.

Over the years Professor Allen has consulted with more than ninety North American and European headquartered firms in areas of industry analysis, competitive strategy, budgetary controls, and international venture evaluation. Current and past clients include Alcan Aluminum, AT&T, Dow-Corning, Digital Equipment, DSM, EMC, General Electric, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, ITT Europe, Intel, Lucent Technologies, Novartis, Pitney-Bowes, Royal Dutch Shell, and Siemens. He has served on the board of directors of three small start-up companies, one of which failed, destroying several million dollars of shareholder value.

Professor Allen is co-author of Managing Diversity and Interdependence: An Organizational Study of Multidivisional Firms, more than 100 teaching cases, and several scholarly articles dealing variously with competitive strategies, reorganizations, international sourcing decisions, international venture analysis, and acquisition strategies. He has received research grants and awards from the Arthur D. Little Foundation and the McKinsey Foundation For Management Research.

Professor Allen holds DBA and MBA degrees from the Harvard Business School. His AB is from Hiram College (magna cum laude), where he was also awarded the Allyn A. Young Prize in Economics. He has lived and worked outside the U.S. for extended periods in France, Ireland, Sweden, and Switzerland.

 

Allan R. Cohen

Dr. Allan R. Cohen recently completed seven years as Chief Academic Officer, leading major curriculum and organizational changes, and has returned to the faculty to teach leadership, change and negotiations.

Dr. Cohen is the co-author of the best seller, Managing for Excellence, (recently re-issued by Wiley as a Management Classic), and Influence Without Authority. His latest book with David Bradford, Power Up; Transforming Organizations through Shared Leadership, was published in March, 1998, and selected as one of the best leadership books of 1998 by the Management General website. Among his many publications is a co-authored textbook, Effective Behavior in Organizations (McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 7 editions, latest 2000), which has had a major impact on the teaching of organizational behavior. He also co-authored the award-winning Alternative Work Schedules: Integrating Individual and Organizational Needs. Dr. Cohen edited The Portable MBA in Management (Wiley, 1993, 2nd ed. 2002).

Dr. Cohen’s consulting clients for a variety of change projects have included General Electric (Work Out), Rohm And Haas, The Hartford, Polaroid, Home Depot, Reebok, Pfizer, Decision Resources, General Scanning, General Mills, Chubb Life, SmithKline Beecham, Digital Equipment Corporation, DSM, and Sulzer Infra. He is a member of the Sulzer Infra Academy Advisory Board.

Dr. Cohen earned an A.B. from Amherst College and M.B.A. and D.B.A. degrees from Harvard Business School.

 

Fritz Fleischmann

Fritz Fleischmann, The William R. Dill Governance Chair. Educated in Germany, England and the United States, Fritz Fleischmann taught at his alma mater in Germany, as well as at Harvard University and Simmons College, and was a visiting professor at the University of Mannheim in 1991. Mr. Fleischmann writes about American literature and culture, with a special interest in gender. Most recently, he edited Margaret Fuller's Cultural Critique: Her Age and Legacy and co-edited Early America Re-Explored: New Readings in Colonial, Early National, and Antebellum Culture. He is currently heading up an international editorial board planning an electronic edition of the uncollected writings of Charles Brockden Brown.

Areas of expertise include English, 18th and 19th century American literature, ecocriticism and gender studies.

 

Dhruv Grewal
Toyota Chair in Commerce and E-Business

Dr. Dhruv Grewal was named Toyota Chair in E-Commerce and Electronic Business at Babson in 2000.

Dr. Grewal is a "Distinguished Fellow" of the Academy of Marketing and Science. He has served as VP-Research & Conferences of the American Marketing Association Academic Council (1999-2001). Currently, he serves as VP-Development for the Academy of Marketing Science (2000-2002).

He is also co-editor of the Journal of Retailing. His research and teaching interests focus on e-business, global marketing, value-based marketing strategies, and understanding the voice of the customer (market research). Dr. Grewal has published more than 50 articles in publications such as Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research, and Journal of Retailing. He currently serves on the editorial review boards of Journal of Marketing, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, and Journal of Product and Brand Management. Dr. Grewal is also working on a book entitled Marketing Research published by Houghton Mifflin Co.

Areas of expertise include marketing, E-Commerce, e-Marketing, high technology marketing, pricing, and value based strategies.

 

Jean-Pierre Jeannet

Dr. Jean-Pierre Jeannet is the F. W. Olin Distinguished Professor of Global Business and Director of The Glavin Center. Dr. Jeannet has primary teaching responsibility for two courses: Global Marketing and Global Strategic Management. He was a visiting lecturer at Keio University Graduate School of Business in Japan, and he has a dual appointment as Professor of Global Marketing and Strategy at IMD (Institute of Management Development) in Lausanne, Switzerland. Dr. Jeannet has taught in numerous management development programs in the United States, Asia, and Europe.

Dr. Jeannet has previous work experience in banking in Switzerland and New York and has been active as a consultant with many international firms including AVEBE, Coutts, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, DSM, Huntsman Chemicals, ICI, Lego, Nokia, Novartis, Polaroid, Serono, Siemens, Sulzer, Swatch, and Zeneca. Professor Jeannet also serves on the board of PubliGroupe, an international media firm, and Swiss House in Boston, as well as President of ECCH at Babson Ltd. His research and teaching focus on marketing strategy, global marketing, and global business strategies.

He is the author of more than 100 teaching cases and several books, including Managing with a Global Mindset, Technology Transfers Within Multinational Corporations, and Competitive Marketing Strategies in a European Context, as well as co-author of Marketing Problems, Cases in International Marketing, Global Marketing: Strategies and Cases, and Cases in Marketing Management.

Areas of expertise include: Marketing, Competitive Strategy, Global Marketing, International Marketing and Market Orientation.

 

John E. Marthinsen
The Distinguished Chair in Swiss Economics

Dr. John Edward Marthinsen's primary research interests are in the areas of corporate finance, banking, and international financial markets. He is the author of numerous articles as well as the co-author of two books, Switzerland: A Guide to the Capital and Money Market (Euromoney) and Entrepreneurship, Productivity, and the Freedom of Information Act (Lexington Books). Dr. Marthinsen teaches mainly in the areas of global macroeconomic analysis, risk management, and international finance. From 1992 to 1998, Professor Marthinsen served as chairman of the Economics Division. In 1997, Babson College awarded him the Distinguished Chair in Swiss Economics of the newly founded Glavin Center for Global Entrepreneurial Leadership. Dr. Marthinsen has extensive consulting experience working for both domestic and international companies and banks, as well as for the US government. He has been a member of the United Nations Association's Economic Policy Council and has lectured at the University of Bern, Switzerland. Dr Marthinsen is a member of the Board of Directors for Givaudan SA, a Swiss-based flavors and fragrances company.

Areas of expertise include: Economics, International Finance, Monetary Policy/Fiscal Policy and Swiss Banking.

Marilyn B. Snyder

In September 2003 Marilyn Snyder was named Deputy Director of the Glavin Center for Global Management, a new position at Babson College. In addition, she is the Director of the Global Programs Services (GPS) a newly formed organization combining the Babson Consulting Services and the Office of International Programs. From 1986 to 2003, she served as Director of Babson Consulting Services which managed approximately 120 projects involving 450 students each year. She also manages Babson’s Executives-in-Residence program and is an instructor for the management division, teaching first-year undergraduates and the graduate course Managing the Consulting Experience. She is co-founder of Babson College’s Center for Information Management Systems (CIMS) and the Center for Women’s Leadership. Marilyn Snyder received her MBA from Babson College and her BA from Boston University. She also studied in Paris and Geneva.
