The Babson Percussion Ensemble performed live for staff, faculty, and students of all ages, as one of many events that took place during International Education Week on Thursday, November 17th at Reynolds Campus Center. Grant Smith, the music director for the group, and a first year student from Colombia, Isaac Safdeye, delighted their audience with rhythms and sounds from Brazilian samba, afro-cuban, African and Middle Eastern influences. The group invited audience participation, providing a variety of percussion instruments to play including conga drums (Cuban), Djembe (African) and dumbec (Middle Eastern). The two-man ensemble is a part of a new group on campus (other members were not available to play at this engagement) and hope their brand of music will gain more momentum as the year progresses. Grant is a professional percussionist who is a long time member of the Klezmer Conservatory band and numerous world music groups in the Boston area. He is also a teacher and has performed all over the world. The event was sponsored by the Sorenson Center for the Arts.
