Where can I study abroad?
You can study abroad at any institution on Babson College's approved program list.  Babson College is continuously seeking new opportunities for its students, and currently there are more than a dozen Babson Partner Schools and more than 20 affiliate institutions.  Combined, they offer opportunities in more than 20 countries.  Babson Partner Schools are ranked as the best business schools in the world.  You will find a complete list of programs in the Education Abroad brochure or on the Countries and Programs page.  Top

What if I don't wish to study abroad for an entire semester?
Babson College sponsors a number of short-term education abroad courses (offshore)  that usually take place during non-academic year periods such as during winter and summer sessions. Locations have included Germany, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Russia, Belgium, and Australia.  Please refer to the Off-Shore Short Courses for information on current offerings.  Top

You also can apply for the Joint Management Consulting Field Experience (J-MCFE), a program that involves working on an international consulting project overseas.  Check with OIP for a brochure describing the J-MCFE program, or refer to the J-MCFE webpageTop

Are there additional options for the Honors Program?
Yes. In addition to the Babson-approved semester programs and off-shore courses, the Honors Program also offers short-term study opportunities. Please refer to the Honors International Program information for current offerings.  Top

What if I want to study abroad on a program or in a country not on Babson College's approved program list? We recognize that the academic needs of some students may not be met by existing programs on Babson’s approved list. Alternatively, students may be interested in a program located in a country in which Babson does not offer an existing program. If a student wishes to study abroad and seek credits towards your Babson College degree on a non-approved program, you must petition in advance of normal study abroad program deadlines. The petition process is lengthy and there is no guarantee that your petition will be granted. An application for petition can be downloaded from the following link: Education Abroad Petition Form. All education Abroad Petition Applications are due no later than December 1st.  Top

What if I don't speak a foreign language?
Babson College has several programs in English-speaking countries, and there are also programs in non-English speaking countries, where you can do most of your course work in English while participating in intensive language courses. These programs include Italy, Spain, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Russia, Greece, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic.  If you are attending a program to learn a language, you are highly encouraged to take the beginning level of this language before going abroad, especially if it is offered at Babson.  Top

How competitive is it to get into a Babson College education abroad program?
Education abroad, like many other programs at Babson, is competitive.  There are an allotted number of placements for all locations.  Keep in mind that you can apply for several locations, and you have three opportunities to study abroad on a semester program (first and second semester junior year and first semester senior year).  If a semester abroad is not possible for you, consider some of Babson's short-term off-shore courses, offered during winter and summer sessions.  Top

What are the eligibility requirements to study abroad?
To apply you must meet the minimum eligibility:

  • At least junior status at the time of departure.
  • Completion of OEM/MCE for Sophomores applying for studying during the 2008-2009 academic year.
  • A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.70 at the time of application and the semester prior to departure (some schools may have even higher GPA requirements).  Failure to maintain adequate academic standing will result in your removal from a program.
  • Demonstrated maturity, clarity of purpose, personal commitment and flexibility through your written essay and personal interactions with OIP staff.  Top

Why is the GPA requirement different for certain programs?
Babson has established an overall minimum GPA requirement for education abroad eligibility. As you explore opportunities, you will find that many schools have higher GPA requirements. You will need to meet the highest requirement between the two. For example, to attend the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, students will need to meet their required 3.0, rather than Babson’s 2.7.  Top

What if my GPA is not high enough at the time of application?
You can submit an application even if you do not have the required 2.7 GPA at the time of application.  We will automatically place you on a waiting list for spring semester, and your continued participation will depend upon your ability to meet the required 2.7 GPA and the availability of program openings.  Alternatively, you may reapply for the fall semester of senior year or consider an off-shore course.  Top

How much will it cost to study abroad?
Costs will vary depending on the program you choose. You will pay Babson College tuition and fees. Other expenses, such as room and board, travel, visa and passport fees, local transportation and personal expenses will vary, depending upon the location. These other costs are paid directly to the host institution or sponsoring organization. In almost all cases, the total cost of studying abroad for a semester is equal to or less than a semester at Babson.  Top

Can I use financial aid?
If you are currently on financial aid and wish to study abroad on a Babson College approved program, you can transfer almost all forms of financial aid to your program (institutional, federal and state). Work study is not transferable, but your financial aid officer can explain your options for compensating for this federal program.   Top

Are scholarships available?
If you are currently receiving a private scholarship you should check with the organization to see if it is transferable to your program of choice.  Remember that you will still be a matriculated Babson College student, receiving Babson credit, while you are overseas. There are also some merit- and need-based scholarships available for eligible students for many programs.  Top

What does the application process entail?
Please refer to the Eligibility and Application Procedure page for detailed information about the application process.  Please note that the on-line application must be filled out and all accompanying forms submitted to OIP by January 29, 2008.   Top

Will all my credits transfer?
With careful planning, all of your credits will transfer towards a Babson degree. However, you must attain at least the equivalent of a "C" in order for the credits to transfer.  You will work with the faculty, OIP, and Academic Services to select courses that fit into your learning plan and concentration(s) and satisfy your curriculum and degree requirements.   Top

Will my grades count?
Because grading systems in foreign countries vary so widely, it is difficult to equate the grades earned on study abroad programs to the grading system at Babson.  It is in your best interest to do as well as you can academically because your foreign transcript will be reviewed if you decide to go to graduate school or apply for certain jobs.  Top

Will I need a passport to study abroad?
YES. You will need an individual passport valid for the duration of your stay. If you do not have a passport and are planning to study abroad, apply for your passport immediately. You can apply for a passport through the Boston Passport Office or at the County Clerk's Office in your hometown.   Top

Do I need a student visa to study abroad?
Almost every country requires a student visa. The Electronic Embassy has some information on student visas. You can also call the closest consulate or embassy. Several countries have consulates in Boston, and all countries are represented in Washington, D.C.   Top

How will I get housing when I return to Babson?
You will be given a housing preference form during your orientation. If you are returning to Babson in the Fall, you will participate in the housing lottery as if you were on campus. If you are returning in the Spring you must complete a form and return it to the designated representative in the Office of Campus Life. Campus Life will assign you housing based on availability.  Top
