Program descriptionOxford University is one of the most prestigious universities in the world. The university was founded in 1250, but the history of some of its colleges goes back even further. Only hard-working, independent students do well at Oxford. If you're passionate about your studies and crave an intellectual challenge, it could be the ideal place for you. Oxford University is a federation of individual colleges. Each college has its tutors, administrators, grounds, residence halls, and traditions. You'll apply to a college, rather than to Oxford University. Once you are accepted into a college, you'll have access to all the facilities of that college and to those of Oxford University itself, including an incredible library system. While your college monitors your progress and looks after your welfare, Oxford University conducts examinations, confers degrees, organizes lectures, and maintains museums, libraries, laboratories, and lecture halls. The faculties of the university are responsible for teaching and scholarship within their disciplines and provide tutors to students within their disciplines in the colleges. One of the great benefits of Oxford University is the tutorial system. Tutorials are individually arranged, taking into account the subject to be studied and the tutor's area of expertise. The tutorial is typically a one-hour meeting between one or two students and the tutor that happens each week or every other week. At the center of the tutorial is an essay on a topic the tutor previously assigned. The tutor will lead a discussion about the essay topic in an effort to provide new insights. At the end of the tutorial, your tutor will assign a new topic and may offer recommended reading. You'll be expected to do much more work on your own and think more independently than in most other teaching methods.
