General format:

Artist Name. Title of work. Date of work (if known). Institution and city where the
work can be found. Date you accessed the work <URL of the work>.

Basic Steps

NOTE: You must disable any popup blockers or add ARTstor to your permitted popup list to use this resource.

Search for images

  • Use the "Basic Search" on ARTstor's main page to search by keyword. Search by artist name, title of a work, genre of work, medium, etc.
  • Use the "Browse" function to view ARTstor's holdings by classification. Search by specific collection, geographic region/nationality, period/genre, etc.
  • Both searching and browsing ARTstor will return results as thumbnail images
  • To view the Image Data for an image, click on the caption beneath the thumbnail.
  • To view a larger version of the image, double click on the thumbnail. This will also allow you to zoom, pan, download, and print the image.

Register with ARTstor

To save images, create image groups or export images, you must register with ARTstor. Click "Register" on the right hand side of the search page. You will be prompted for your Babson email address and a password of your choice.

Download the Offline Image Viewer

To use high-quality ARTstor images for presentations, you must download the Offline Image Viewer (OIV). From any page within ARTstor, click on "Tools" from the top menu bar and select "Download Offline Viewer". Once the file downloads, open the file to initialize the viewer

Saving Image Groups
  • Log on to your ARTstor account
  • Search or Browse for images, and single-click on thumbnails to highlight what you wish to save. Highlighted images are remembered across multiple pages of a single search.
  • Click "Image Groups" on the toolbar menu
  • Choose "Save selected images to new group". The default folder is your personal folder, called "My Work Folder".
  • Enter a name for your Image Group in the field under "Group"
  • Click "Save and Open" to finish

  • Open the Offline Image Viewer from your desktop
  • Select "Insert", then select "Image group(s) from ARTstor"
  • Log in using your ARTstor registration information
  • Select "My Work Folder", and select the image group you'd like to use
  • Click "Download", and your image group will become available for editing

Viewing & Printing Options

Saving images

  • Search for an image and double-click to open the larger view
  • Click the "save" icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen
  • Agree to the ARTstor terms of use
  • Name your file and save to your preferred location. Two files will download - the .jpg file is the image itself, while the .html file contains descriptive information about the image
  • Be aware - this method will yield images of significantly lower quality than when using the OIV
Printing Images
  • Search for an image and double-click to upen the larger view
  • Use the "pan" and "zoom" features to isolate the portion of the image you want to use
  • Click the "print" icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. This will print both the image (maximum size: 5.5" on the long side) as well as ARTstor image information
  • Select your preferred printer and click "print"
