Basic Steps for Federal Search

  1. Click Enter at the log-in screen.
  2. Enter your email address.
  3. Select content for searching by clicking on one of the menu bar tabs; refine content by checking box(es) below.
  4. Click on one of the three boxes below the top search box to either do a template search (Citation, Citator) or change settings for word searching (Word).
  5. The Federal, StateFinancial & Estate Planning tabbed sections provide topical indexes (bottom of screen), if you choose to browse; expand categories by repeatedly clicking on links to reveal deeper layers.

Search Methods

Citation Search:

  1. Select the Federal, State or Financial & Estate tab and select content to be searched.
  2. Click on the Find by Citation button in the toolbar.
  3. Enter the citation using one of the two following methods:

    If you know the official citation, type the complete citation in the top box; Use p for paragraph marker and s, ss or sec for section marker. Example from the Standard Federal Tax Reporter: 99 fed p5350 s58

    If you prefer to do less typing and would like a simpler method, cursor down until you find the appropriate citation format box and enter number(s) needed.

  4. Click on the corresponding Search button.

Citator:

  1. Click on the Federal tab.
  2. A citation list may be obtained using any of the three following methods:

  1. Click on the Find by Citation button in the tool bar.
  2. Cursor down until you find the appropriate citation format box and type in the number(s).
  3. Click on the corresponding Search button.

When the party names in a case are known...

  1. Click on the box next to a category or title of material to be searched. Example: Cursor down to Primary Sources and check the Cases box.
  2. Type both party names using the connector and. Generally omit generic party names such as United States, Commissioner and IRS; use the more uniquely-named party. Example: In United States v. Daniel R. Zimmerman, use bold-faced name.
  3. Click on the Search Tools button. Set the Search Method to Boolean Connectors from the pull-down menu. Cursor to the bottom of the screen and set the Search in Which Part of a Document pull-down menu to case-name.
  4. Click on the Search Now button.
  5. Click on the case to open the document, if needed.
  6. Click on the Check Citator button, if you want to know which cases have cited your case.

Word

  1. Click on the Federal or State or Financial & Estate tab.
  2. Select material to search by checking the appropriate box(es).
  3. If you want to do more than a single-word search, click on the Search Tools button. Set the criteria for your search. You may select a search method, indicate how you would like your search results processed, set a date restriction, select parts (fields) of a document to search and limit to document types. (Active links provide additional search tips.)
  4. It is not enough to enter search terms in the box; you must also set the corresponding search method under the Search Tools button. You will be given the opportunity to Apply Changes.
  5. The following two columns illustrate search methods that are operational: (Sample searches are shown in parentheses under each method.)

  7. To do a search within a search, click on the X (to left of box), type new search terms and adjust Search Tools button (if needed) before clicking Search button.

  8. Before performing a new search, click on the Clear Selections button to erase an existing search. Clicking on the Clear Selections button will reset the default settings in the Search Tools section, as well as uncheck any materials previously selected for searching.

Viewing, Printing & Saving Options

Look for Export (download uses .rtf extension), Print and Email icons in menu bar.

Store documents in Research Folder:

  1. When a document is open, click on Add under Research Folder (in the menu bar). 
  2. Click on Create a New Folder, name it in the dialog box which appears at top left, and click OK.
  3. Move each document - one by  one - to the "waiting dock" area.
  4. Check documents and click Move Documents to New Folder.

Scope

CCH Tax Research Network provides searchable, full-text coverage via internet access to numerous federal and state tax publications.  Our contract with Commerce Clearing House allows access to Federal, State, Sales Tax, Financial & Estate and Tools. Notable secondary publications include several CCH Reporters: federal (income, estate/gift, excise and tax treaties) and state (individual and multistate).  Primary source coverage includes the Internal Revenue Service code, manual, letter rulings and positions, as well as access to tax regulations and cases.  Federal archives date back to 1978, while the state archives go back to 1994.

Customize scope options by choosing categories, select from Boolean or citation format searching and utilize CCH's vast network of topical indices and hypertext links.
