What do you need to know about licensing of business cases?

Business cases are published works licensed from the publishers and fall outside of the rules for other media. Copyright permissions need to be purchased for each individual who will be using a case. Cases can be purchased through the Babson College bookstore or check the library Case Studies to learn how to purchase them yourself. The Bookstore has an arrangement with Harvard Business School for its cases.

Make a copy of a case?

No, you cannot make a copy of a case. Since copyright permissions need to be purchased for each individual who will be using the case, they are not available online and the library does not own any. Cases can be purchased through the bookstore, which has an arrangement with the HBS and Babson to photocopy and distribute cases, or you can find information on the library website on how to purchase them yourself. For Babson cases, you can also contact David Wylie, Editor, Case Publishing, Case Writing Center, x6181, wylie@babson.edu.

Use a case in the classroom?

You cannot freely make copies of cases because they are licensed from their publisher.

Faculty may use the cases they wrote with their classes. For other Babson cases, contact David Wylie, Editor, Case Publishing, Case Writing Center, x6181, wylie@babson.edu

Digitize a segment from a case for faculty use in the classroom?

You may need copyright permission to place a case on your web site. If you are creating a media-rich case based upon an existing case, consider whether you are using ideas or verbatim content in your development.

Place case on reserve in the library for student use?

The library will not place any cases on reserve but will refer you to the bookstore to purchase copies.

Place a case on Blackboard?

You will generally need copyright permission to place a case on your web site. There is a stated policy/agreement with the bookstore on posting cases to Blackboard for the Babson Intel hybrid MBA program. If there is any question, contact the bookstore.

If you wrote the case, you can put it on your Blackboard site without going through the bookstore.

If you are creating a media-rich case based upon an existing case, consider whether you are using ideas or verbatim content in your development.
