Almanac of Business and Industrial Financial Ratios. - (Information Desk 1) - Ten ratios for about 180 selected four-digit SIC codes including a detailed breakdown by size of assets. Figures are based on IRS annual statistics, which provide a larger database than that used by either D&B or RMA, but these statistics are slow to appear and provide no balance sheet data. The income statement ratios, however, are very detailed. Trends in selected ratios and factors over a ten-year period are shown for each industry group.
The Almanac provides norms in actual dollar amounts for revenue and capital factors such as net receivables, inventories, total assets, and it gives you important average operating costs in percent of net sales for: cost of operations, pensions and benefits, compensation of officers, wages and salaries, taxes and more.
Dun & Bradstreet's Industry Norms and Key Business Ratios. (Information Desk 1) Reports 14 ratios for more than 800 SIC categories. Data reported for median, upper, and lower quartiles. Includes balance sheet data reported in both dollars and percentages for each industry category. Based on reports for over 1 million private and public companies in the D&B database.
RMA's Annual Statement Studies (now Risk Management Association, formerly Robert Morris Associates). Information Desk1 and now online - Printed version reports 17 ratios for more than 360 industry groups. Ratio data grouped by asset size and sales volume, with 5 year historical data given. Based on company data submitted by RMA member banks, rather than a statistical sample or other methodology. Sample pages and definitions are available online
The printed version is tricky to use. First, go to table of contents, which lists the SIC codes and the corresponding page numbers. Then turn to the corresponding page. To read the report, go to the Comparative Historical Data column in the middle of the book. From this column, select the year that you need. The last five years are listed. Match the year with the type of data you need.
