News about the European Union

Europa - This gateway to the European Union is your starting point for news and official information. Browse by topic, choose a branch of the EU or search for specific topics.

EIU.com- The "Economist Intelligence Unit" (EIU) is an excellent source of up-to-date news, data, and analysis on all areas of the globe. Click into the EIU portal and find specific links to "FT News" which provides articles from the "Financial Times" and the "EuropeanVoice.com", which is a weekly newspaper that provides an "independent" look at the European Union. To search the entire site at once, enter your search terms (i.e. EU or a topic like enlargement or euro) in the search box. If you are interested in specifc countries within the European Union, see also the Country publications on various topics. Reports will often include data tables, as well as text. Data files may be easily downloaded into excel.

The Economist is the best global magazine for current news and analysis. Some of the articles on the web site are available for fre., although many require a paid subcription. The library keeps a copy of the current magazine on Reserve at Information Desk 1. Also the full-text of the articles are available through Factiva. On the Factiva toolbar, click on the "News Pages"; in the left hand column, change the news stand to "Global"; see the "Economist" at the bottom on the right.

The Financial Times is the leading newspaper for global finance, economics and other news. Get headlines and some free text on the web site for free. Also, the library subscribes to a paper copy, which is available on the newspaper stand on the first floor in the lounge. For electronic access to the full text of FT articles, the best source isFactiva. On the Factiva toolbar, click on the "News Pages"; in the left hand column, change the news stand to "Global"; see the "Financial Times" in the middle of the right hand news stand.

Factiva is also a great source for Official Documents from the European Union. This includes Treaties, International Agreements, Secondary Legislation, case law, information on Government Bodies, and news. Search by Celex Number or by EU number, as well as free text. To access the EU reports, click on the News Pages link, then choose "European Union" from the drop down menu in the left hand column. Also, see the "Editor's Top Picks" in the left hand column for links to European organizations like the Council of Europe, EU Business, EU Court of Justice and Court of First Instance, Europa - The European Union Online, the European Central Bank, the European Parliament, and others.

SourceOECD - In addition to in-depth reports on specific countries, see reports on education, the environment, research & development, the economy and other topics. The "Economic Surveys" provide a detailed overview and data tables on OECD members. Under Statistical Databases see the ITCS Trade by Commodity database for details on trade within EU countries, or between the EU and other trading partners. Use the search forms to look for reports on particular topics. See the "At a Glance" tab for data, charts and brief text on a variety of topics.

Data Sources

Eurostat The official web site of the Statistical Office of the European Communities. Provides extensive search function, as well as charts and tables. For a quick look at European data in print, see Europe in Figures, which is available at under HC241.2 E81279 (Information Desk 1).

Global Insight DataInsight-Web - Provides historic data from the IMF, OECD, US government, and other sources. Data can be downloaded into Excel. Note: Some of the datasets are also available through WRDS.

Euromonitor Provides macroeconomic and consumer market data, as well as reports on products and consumer lifestyles. Great for economic indicators, orfor example to contrast industry trends with a country's GDP. Search by the EU as a region or look for individual countries. Compare trends between new and old members. The database provides over 20 years of historical data and 5 years of forecast data for most series. Download your information into word or excel or PDF formats.

Bloomberg (Available in the Cutler Center.) Type ECST <Go> and click on the flag for your country.

Articles, Reports, and Outside Web Sites

EBSCOhost Business Source Complete - As with many topics, EBSCOhost is the best place to look for articles on a particular topic, if you are starting a research paper, or would like an overview. Search by "European Union" as a geographic segment, and find reports on governing bodies and individual countries. Some reports contain links to data tables.

European Union in the US - The site has EU Basics, news, speeches, documents, law & policy overviews, and a lengthy index of European Union web sites of Europa (described above) and other sources. Includes links to "EU-US Partnership" and "The European Union: a Guide for Americans."

The Euro Homepage - Originally created by Giancarlo Corsetti, Professor of Economics at Yale University, this page is now run by the European Univerisy Institute's "Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies. Reviewed by the Internet Scout Project. See web links to topics like: single market, common currency area, enlargement, monetary policy, global economy, etc. See reports on the European economy, as well as links to outside blogs.

European Union Internet Resource - This guide provides a gateway to EU web sites. It includes web servers, documents, treaties, journals, bibliographic tools, links to EU offices around the world, and other information. Compiled by the University of California at Berkeley, Doe & Moffitt Libraries.
