  • browse and search the NAICS site to identify the 1997 & 2002 NAICS codes as well as the SIC code for your product.
  • Check out your suppliers & business customers as well
  • View code descriptions and
  • then follow the Economic census links for statistics.  The 2002 Economic Census reports cover materials used & other in put measures.

Economic Census - revenues by geographic area, sources of income, materials used, business expenses for major NAICS industries

E-Stats
- quarterly electronic commerce sales, plus annual sales by product category

Current Industrial Reports - annual, quarterly or monthly shipments of industrial and consumer products and parts and the materials consumed.  If your product is not covered, try the Annual Survey of Manufactures.

InfoTrac Web - Search your industry and browse By Subdivision plus Related Subjects.  You can also search an SIC code and use Relevance searching.

  • Expanded Academic - science journals
  • Business & Company Resource Center - industry reports, associations
  • Small Business Resource Center - how-tos, plans for mostly service companies, directories of key associations, trade journals and more.

And don't forget:

  • Webnet Library Catalog - looks for books on your industry, including books at Olin College.  Use your Babson ID and library PIN to request books from other WEBnet libraries.
  • Find Online Journals - to locate online full text for specific journals.
  • InterLibrary Loan - for articles, books and reports not available at Babson

Olin College Library - perhaps your best place for researching technologies with its engineering and science databases:  ACM Digital Library, Engineering Village2, IEEE Xplore, Science Direct and many online handbooks.  You can also Search Olin's E-Journals to see if they have a journal you need. The library is open for visitors Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.

Thomas Register - identify U.S. manufacturers of specific products

Capital IQ - for suppliers, competitors and relationships

Hoovers - provides lists of competitors for major public & private companies

Mergent Online - provides company history, joint ventures, plus access to EDGAR filings with the SEC.

Associations & Trade Journals

Identify associations & trade publications fro your industry using sources below.  Then:

  • Check association web sites for market publications and student memberships
  • Use Find Online Journals to browse publications in our databases
  • Selected association reports maybe available at Babson (check the Library Catalog), through InterLibrary Loan, or ask a librarian to help you obtain the source from another library. 

Small Business Resource Center - find sample business plans as well as lists of key associations, trade journals, and specialized ratio sources.

Encyclopdedia of Business Information Sources HF5353.E52 (Information Desk 1) - look up your industry for a list of key trade associations, trade journals, statistical sources, etc. Now available online in Directories section of the Small Business Resource Center - enter your industry keyword and from the results choose the Directories tab.
