Mark Albion of Babson’s Lewis Initiative Keynotes at National Conference on Volunteering and Service

Dr. Mark Albion, Office of the President for the Lewis Initiative at Babson College, will deliver the opening keynote for the Business Track of the 2009 National Conference on Volunteering and Service June 23 in San Francisco. undefined

Dr. Albion will speak on “Responding to the New World: Making Sense of the Changing World and the Role of Corporate Service.” He will then introduce and summarize two keynote speeches by Randy Pond, Executive Vice President, Operations, Processing, and Systems for Cisco Systems, Inc., and Sharon Allen, Chairman of the Board for Deloitte LLP. From an operational and a governance perspective, respectively, they will discuss how a business model can effectively integrate social change for the benefit of everyone involved. Following the opening session, Dr. Albion will moderate a panel of executives from Eli Lily, Timberland, Kaiser and UPS on “The Relevance of Community Service to Corporate Strategy.”

A seven-time social entrepreneur, Dr. Albion left Harvard Business School after nearly 20 years as a student and professor, to develop a community of service-minded MBAs, co-founding Net Impact in 1993. He's made 600+ visits to speak at business schools on five continents, for which Business Week magazine dubbed him “the savior of B-school souls."  In 1996, he officially represented the United States at the United Nations to speak on how to educate the next generation of socially conscious global leaders.

Dr. Albion is the author of seven books, most recently More Than Money: Questions Every MBA Needs to Answer, with a foreword by Net Impact executive director Liz Maw. This past fall, the book was distributed electronically to up to 55,000 MBAs in 75 schools. He is co-founder and chair of the More Than Money Institute LLC which was launched last February to help business students implement the book's framework. An animated movie based on the book, "The Good Life Parable: An MBA Meets a Fisherman," was awarded the largest environmental film festival's official short-film selection last January.

The 2009 National Conference on Volunteering and Service is the world's largest gathering of volunteer and service leaders from the nonprofit, government and corporate sectors. Co-convened by Points of Light Institute and the Corporation for National and Community Service, the annual 4500-person event provides an opportunity to learn, connect and be inspired through a wide range of plenary sessions, workshops, special events, service projects, exhibits, specialized corporate tracks and more. The 2009 conference theme is “Civic. Energy. Generation.” capturing the passion for service emanating from all generations in this time of great need in our nation.
