Babson's Brush Earns Recognition from Emerald Publishing

Special Issue of IJOEM Is "Highly Commended" for 2007

Babson entrepreneurship professor Candida G. Brush, a guest editor of the International Journal of Emerging Markets’ (IJOEM) on "Small to medium enterprises in emerging markets," was notified that the issue was declared as one of three “Highly Commended” special issues published by Emerald in 2007.

Brush holds the Paul T. Babson Chair in Entrepreneurship and is the entrepreneurship division chair.

She is well known for her research in women’s entrepreneurship and conducted the first and largest study of women entrepreneurs in the early 1980s. That resulted in one of the earliest books on the topic. With four other researchers she founded the Diana Project, a research consortium investigating women’s access to growth capital. Their book, Clearing the Hurdles: Women Building High Growth Businesses, was published in 2004.  In 2006 she co-edited a book Growth-Oriented Women Entrepreneurs and their Businesses, A Global Research Perspective.

Brush has authored several publications on new venture strategies and international entrepreneurship. Her research is published in both management and entrepreneurship journals including Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Management, Academy of Management Executive, and Strategic Management Journal. Her research is often featured in noted popular media including the Wall Street Journal, Business Week on Line, the Boston Globe and Inc.

A frequent adviser to the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy on women’s entrepreneurship, Brush was appointed to the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services. She serves on the Board of Directors of Camp Starfish, a nonprofit organization sponsoring a camp for emotionally handicapped children.

Prior to joining Babson, Brush was an Associate Professor of Strategy and Policy, Founder of the Council for Women’s Entrepreneurship and Leadership, and Research Director for the Entrepreneurial Management Institute at Boston University. She had early entrepreneurial experience in the airline industry and small business consulting, and co-founded a land development company.

She received her DBA from Boston University, an MBA from Boston College and a BA from the University of Colorado.

Emerald recognizes the very distinct contribution made by special issues to our journals by making an annual award to the Guest Editor(s) of the outstanding special issue of the year. It is a way of recognizing and rewarding the very real contribution made by the Guest Editors and of acknowledging the added value brought to the journals through their hard work and expertise.

In addition to Brush, this IJOEM special issue was co-edited with Rangamohan V. Eunni and Rammohan R. Kasuganti, both from Williamson College of Business Administration, Youngstown State University, Ohio.

With over two hundred journals, Emerald publishes many special issues each year, and being recognised in this way demonstrates the quality of research contained in the issue.

The challenge of compiling a themed issue on the subject chosen is recognized by the Guest Editors who comment that “While these countries no doubt share a commonality in introducing market reforms and erecting business-friendly market structures in recent years, variances arising from unique historical experiences, political legacies and cultural antecedents results in a diverse mosaic of regulatory and economic milieus that have a significant impact on the operation of SMEs”. That they have done so is a credit to them and Yusaf Akbar, the Editor of the recently launched International Journal of Emerging Markets, to whom they pay tribute.
