Julio de Castro Named Professor of Entrepreneurship at Babson

Julio O. de Castro has been named Professor of Entrepreneurship and Lewis Family Distinguished Professor at Babson College.

 

De Castro is former Associate Dean of Research, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Strategy, and chair of the Strategy Department at Instituto de Empresa(IE), in Madrid, Spain.

 

De Castro’s research examines entrepreneurial and cross-cultural aspects of firm management and strategy.  His focus is on the characteristics of the process of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial failure and exits, the nature of entrepreneurship among women and Hispanics, and the nature of the entrepreneurial process in micro-enterprises.

 

He also studies the process of privatization of state-owned enterprises and the nature of the process of technology transfer and its effects on new venture creation, from the perspective of the firm and its strategy, and with a particular interest in less developed and former Communist countries.

 

De Castro’s work is published in the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and the Journal of High Technology Management Research, to name a few.

 

Prior to IE, de Castro taught strategy and organization management at the University of Colorado, Boulder.


His corporate experience includes work at La Estrella in the Dominican Republic; and he has consulted for Grupo BHD, Banco BHD, Aeromar Airlines and Centro Gerencial Meta, among others.

 

De Castro, who is originally from the Dominican Republic, earned his PhD in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina, and Industrial Engineering degree from Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, in the Dominican Republic.


He has served on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management, and is president of the Iberoamerican Academy of Management. He is associate editor of The Journal of Small Business Management,
and serves on the editorial boards of The Journal of Management Studies, Revista de Empresa, Management Research,The Journal of High Technology Management Research, Journal of World Business, and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. Previously, he served on the editorial board of the Academy of Management Journal.
