Undergrad Custom Design Jewelry Business Wins Babson Business Plan Competition

Sleep Disorder Care and Tire Recycling Companies are Runners-Up

Babson seniors Matthew D. Lauzon and Jason A. Reuben have won the 2007 John H. Muller Award Business Plan Competition for their business Paragon Lake.

Paragon Lake designs, manufactures, and distributes fine custom jewelry to retailers and consumers in the United States. The company combines extensive industry experience with technological innovation to deliver products with increased quality, accuracy, and speed.

Getting recognition for their achievements is not new to Lauzon and Reuben. Last fall, BusinessWeek named the Paragon Lake founders among the “Best Entrepreneurs Under 25.” Lauzon was also a finalist in the “Most Promising Campus CEO” contest sponsored by Kaplan Publishing. Reuben was on a Babson team that was named a finalist in an International Business Challenge in Texas last fall, and placed 2nd in a National Case Competition in Montreal in February.

A blog on Paragon Lake in the Babson Newsroom offers a succinct history of the company, and Matt’s personal blog is all about everything to do with being a student who is passionate about life, learning, and business.

Listen to Matt and Jason converse with Undergraduate Dean Dennis Hanno and the SGA (Student Government Association) then-president Alvin Wade about being named among the top 5 businesses by entrepreneurs under the age of 25.

In third place was US Tire Recyclers, and senior Elias Eduardo Zabaneh. US Tire Recyclers seeks to efficiently collect, process, and recycle tires profitably through regional markets around the world.

The Muller Prize honors an undergraduate individual or team with $5,000 for developing the best business plan in an entrepreneurial venture, $2,500 to the first runner-up, and $1,000 to the second runner-up. An independent panel of judges evaluates the competing business plans and makes the decision after listening to finalists’ presentations. The award was presented by John H. Muller Jr., founder and former chairman of General Housewares Corporation and chairman of the Babson College Board of Trustees from 1989 to 1997.
