Babson Student Takes Home Six Awards Including Top Honor

Graduating Babson senior Dan Brown from Chariton, Iowa, will take home a Bachelor of Science degree, five academic and leadership awards, and the College’s top student prize: The Roger W. Babson Award.

Brown, the son of Linda Fry of Chariton, and Paul Brown, also of Chariton, will stay on campus this summer to earn a Master of Science in accounting degree. Then he will go to Norwalk, Conn. where he will serve as post-graduate technical assistant to the Government Accounting Standards Board, a highly competitive position.

In addition, Brown has already been hired by PriceWaterhouseCoopers and will begin working there when his one-year post-graduate internship with GASB is completed.

The Roger W. Babson Award was presented to Brown by Babson President Leonard Schlesinger at the senior awards ceremony. “There is much to say about Brown’s contributions and accomplishments,” said Schlesinger. “The awards he has already received are a testament to his impact on the Babson community, intellectually and personally. And there is much to be said about his academic achievement--his scholarship as a member of the Honors Program, making the Dean’s List every semester, and his graduation with a 3.97 grade point average.”

“But perhaps the most important way to describe this student is in the words of one of my colleagues,” Schlesinger continued. “‘He is one of a kind. We have many students who leave lasting legacies at Babson but there are very few who will leave a void in our community that cannot be completely filled. This is because there is simply nobody quite like Dan Brown.’”

Dan’s awards include:

  • Economics Achievement Award - for outstanding scholarship, initiative, and resourcefulness in the field of economics by a graduating senior who has taken 4 or more economics courses at the end of the fall semester.
  • Clinton A. Petersen Accounting Award - presented to a senior with 6 or more accounting courses who has the highest degree of knowledge in all phases of accounting.
  • Resident Assistant recognition
  • Dean’s Leadership & Achievement Award
  • Michael J. Conlon Spirit Award - Michael Conlon was a beloved student who died tragically in a car accident in 1996. The award, voted by peers, is given to the graduating senior who best demonstrates qualities Michael embodied including: leadership, integrity, loyalty, academic excellence, and most importantly, a willingness to find the time to care and support others.
  • Roger W. Babson Award – presented to the graduating senior who has excelled in scholarship (3.5 GPA & above), co-curricular activities, and leadership.

“I left Iowa four years ago, not knowing that I would someday build houses in Louisiana, teach entrepreneurship in Ghana, plan campus activities for 1,700 students, or receive the Roger W. Babson Award,” said Brown. “But when you come to Babson these things not only become possible, they become reality. If you know the dedicated members of the Babson community, you know why.”

“Four years of extraordinary education, limitless opportunity, and a community of friends I will never forget – this is what Babson has meant to me,” Brown concluded.
