Sharma is a leading scholar in the field of family business and editor of Family Business Review. A professor at the John Molson School of Business, Concordia University in Canada, she is also a visiting professor at Jönköping International Business School in Sweden.

Her research on the succession processes, governance, and dynamics underlying family firms has been honored with several international awards including the NFIB (National Federation of Independent Business) Best Dissertation award from the Entrepreneurship division of the Academy of Management and several best paper awards from the Family Firm Institute. Her most recent book (with Frank Hoy) on Entrepreneurial Family Firms was published in August 2009.
