Babson's New Solar-Powered Lights Brighten Campus Pathways

Babson College has installed new solar-powered lights to brighten campus walking paths.  The solar-powered system illuminates a campus pathway near Van Winkle residence hall across the athletic fields to the Webster Athletic Center.

“Babson is committed to the use of new energy solutions that are both economical and energy-saving,” says Shelley Kaplan, Babson’s Associate Vice President for Facilities Management and Planning. “These solar-powered lamps deliver excellent, targeted visibility.”

Kaplan said that installation and site construction were minimal because the system from SolarOne® Solutions in Framingham did not need disruptive excavations, trench digging, and restoration/repaving that traditional lighting requires. This minimal disruption was important because of the location of nearby residence halls.

The new system allows extensive control to match real energy consumption to available solar resources. “We can fine-tune light levels and timing to match what we need,” says Kaplan. “This solar system will continue working even when we experience an electrical power outage.”

SolarOne Solutions offers SoLed™ overhead lights for pathways, sidewalks, parking lots, and bus shelters. The company is supported in part by the SEED program from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative. For further information visit: www.solarone.net.
