Babson College, the world’s #1 school for entrepreneurship, and Zipcar, the world’s largest car sharing service, have announced a joint partnership to provide Zipcars on campus to university faculty, staff, and students as an environmentally friendly alternative to the costs and hassles of keeping a car on campus. The partnership continues Babson College’s commitment to provide sustainable transportation options that decrease the parking demand on campus and grows Zipcar’s leading on campus program to more than three dozen university partners.
Two self-service Zipcars— a Toyota Prius and Volvo S40 - will be available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The cars will be located at the entrance of Trim Parking Lot and will be available to all staff and students aged 18 plus. Gas, maintenance, insurance and reserved parking are included in the low hourly and daily rates. Zipcar was selected as Babson College’s car sharing partner based on Zipcar’s ability to customize the on campus car sharing program to its student’s needs and a proven track record of providing universities with a cost effective and environmentally-friendly transportation solution.
"Zipcar’s ability to simply offer car sharing on campus to all of our students made the partnership a natural fit with both our environmental initiatives and our desire to increase transportation options” said Dennis Hanno, Dean of the Undergraduate School at Babson College. "The program will allow our students the freedom to travel off campus. It also gives us the opportunity to introduce our community to behavioral changes that can greatly impact energy management and environmental sustainability.”
For university students who cannot or do not want to bring a privately-owned car to school, Zipcar provides the freedom to travel off campus to attend interviews, run errands or take a weekend trip. Zipcar also eliminates hundreds of dollars in monthly transportation costs, saving members an average of $436/month or $5,232/year when compared with car ownership – money that can be put toward other more relevant expenses such as tuition and housing.
Faculty, staff and students will be able to join Zipcar at www.zipcar.com/babson for $35 and will gain access to Babson College Zipcars for $8 per hour or $60 per day. All members 21+ will also have access to Zipcar's network of more than 3,500 vehicles throughout the UK and North America.
Among the dozens of colleges that have partnered with Zipcar to reduce traffic, noise and parking demands are MIT, Columbia, Georgetown, Rutgers, San Francisco State, American University, Harvard University, University of Minnesota, University of Toronto, University of North Carolina and The University of Chicago.
