Business Week MBA Rankings Gives Babson Faculty A For Teaching

In the Business Week 11th “The Best B-Schools” ranking, Babson’s faculty was awarded an A for teaching based on a survey of our graduating MBAs from the Class of 2008.

The other ranking highlights:

·        Babson was listed alphabetically (schools are not rank ordered) in the cohort of programs between #31-45 (same as the last ranking in 2006).  Included in this group are Georgetown, Rochester, and six Big 10 schools – Purdue, Ohio State, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan State, and Illinois.  We are in the company of excellent MBA programs.

·        Babson was ranked #18 for Post-MBA Salary Gain (salary gain our students realized when comparing salary amount pre-Babson versus salary at graduation).

·        Babson was ranked #18 on MBA Return on Investment (time it takes for an MBA to recoup the cost of the degree).

·        Babson received a C from our May, 2008 graduates in the area of Career Services.  Since this survey was completed in the spring, we have changed the leadership of our CCD team, brought on several outstanding professionals to the organization, and completely re-shaped the model to provide a more student-centric career services approach for our entire MBA population.  The initial feedback from students is very positive.

Survey publications employ different methodologies.  Business Week surveyed 2008 graduates from 100 top business schools, as well as recruiters from nearly 500 companies. They also counted the number of articles published by each school's faculty in 20 top academic journals. The student surveys count for 45% of the ranking, as does the recruiter survey. The remaining 10% of the ranking score is the Intellectual Capital ranking of our faculty.

“I am especially gratified our students felt our faculty deserved an A for their teaching.  For perspective, of the Top 45 MBA programs ranked by Business Week, 25 received Bs and Cs from their students, including 6 of the Top 10 MBA programs, where apparently the actual quality of the education is questioned by their students.  This high mark from our most recent graduates reinforces what we all know – our faculty is truly amazing!  In addition, the strong “value” aspect of our program, as evidenced by strong salary advancement and Business Week’s ROI metric, is also cause for satisfaction,” said Allan Cohen, Dean of the Olin Graduate School (Interim).  “I want to thank the entire Babson community for your passionate and enduring efforts to make our MBA student experience strong—and your continuing efforts to make it even stronger in the future.”
