Student Business Licensing Form
Babson encourages all students to experience entrepreneurship by starting a business venture during their time at Babson. These student run businesses are considered a co-curricular activity (excluding FME), but receive much support from the college through the Commerce Committee of the Student Government Association.
First, the college requires that all student business get licensed before they can start selling on campus, this process is quick and easy. Licensing a student business through the Commerce Committee also has many benefits. One of the major benefits to licensing a student business is the enhanced ability to market the business on campus. Once licensed, the business will be able to send UGRAD emails to help get their name out. In addition, one significant benefit of becoming a licensed business is the access to free legal and accounting services. Most importantly, becoming a licensed business owner on campus gains the student membership into the Chamber of Commerce and a central resource for all business needs.
When a business owner decides they want to get licensed they first fill out a license application. This application gets sent to the licensing director who prepares the actual license for the student business. Once the license is completed the Commerce Committee invites the student business owner to one of the weekly committee meetings to talk about the business idea. During the meeting the committee members offer any suggestions or ideas to help the owner proceed with getting the business started. Finally, the licensing director walks the business owner through the license contract and answers any questions. Once this is completed, the student business owner can then set up a meeting with the Director of Campus Life who will ultimately approve the business to start selling on campus. After this, you’ve officially started a business at Babson, and are among the elite group of students entrepreneurs on campus!
