Fire Safety Reminders To minimize fire and safety hazards within the halls, the following items are not permitted in the residence halls:
- Unauthorized lofts
- Candles (including candles that have never been lit)
- Electric blankets
- Other heat producing appliances (please refer to the Undergraduate Student Handbook or "Health and Safety Inspections" page on our website for a list of sample items)
- Halogen Lamps (floor torchee style)
The Office of Campus Life is aware that there are many types of torchee style Halogen Lamps on the market today - including types with grates and shut-off mechanisms.
Consumer safety groups have tested these lamps and we believe that none have been proven safe for a dormitory- style living arrangement. If you require additional lighting in your room, we recommend that you purchase a desk lamp for "task" lighting (halogen desk lamps, are permitted) and a floor lamp with multiple incandescent bulb fixtures for general lighting. If you have any questions about your lighting options, please contact your RA or your Residence Director.
Students found violating the fire safety rules and regulations will face possible judicial charges via the college judicial process.
