Wireless Networking Babson College's wireless network allows laptop computers to connect to our network without having to plug a network cable into a data jack on the wall. This allows you to move your laptop throughout the building without losing your network connection. The wireless network is based on the 802.11g (Wi-Fi) standard which operates at up to a 54 Megabit/second data transmission rate and is backwards compatible with the slower 802.11b (Wi-Fi) standard.
The wireless network is available in every building on campus.
Connecting to Babson's Wireless Network
ITSD currently provides two wireless networks for users to choose from:
- Babson's primary wireless network is broadcast with the SSID Babson. This secure wireless connection is the preferred method when using Babson College network resources. This configuration allows access to network shares, e-mail, and printers located around campus.
- Undergraduate Students and employees with Babson laptops are automatically configured to access the Babson secured wireless network.
- Graduate Students and other Babson users with non-Babson laptops will need to follow these instructions to configure their computer to connect to the Babson secured wireless network. These instructions use the XP built-in wireless configuration tool. Many computers use a proprietary wireless configuration utility. If you are using a system that has a different wireless configuration tool it is recommended that you disable it and use the built-in utility from XP.
- A secondary wireless network is broadcast with the SSID OpenWireless. This unsecure connection is for individuals who are not administrators on their systems but need Internet access while on campus and for visitors to the campus who would like Internet access during their stay. This network is Internet only and does not allow direct access to any resources on the Babson network. Many basic network resources can still be accessed through the OpenWireless configuration by using the Babson Portal.
Users with a Lenovo (IBM) laptop may need to activate the wireless networking feature on their laptop. To do this, hold down the FN key and press F5. You can also repeat this step to deactivate wireless networking.
