File SharingFile sharing technologies such as BitTorrent, Limewire, Kazaa, IRC, etc., facilitate the "sharing" of digital files via the Internet. In fact, such "sharing", although innocuous sounding, often results in a massive volume of unauthorized reproduction and distribution of copyrighted materials, such as music, movies, software, and other files.
When used in connection with copyrighted content and without the permission of the copyright owner, such file sharing constitutes copyright infringement that is actionable under ITSD's Acceptable Use Policy and applicable Federal Law. Violation of copyright law can subject the infringer to serious civil legal action by the owner of the copyright and criminal legal action by applicable law enforcement authorities. If the College receives a valid and proper subpoena requesting student information, the College intends to cooperate fully with the subpoena and any such related investigation.
Moreover, the massive transmission of copyrighted materials using these technologies has the potential to degrade performance of the College's network and computing facilities and thus to hinder purposeful academic pursuits on campus. Please use campus electronic resources responsibly.
