Other Frequently Asked Questions About Networking

Can I connect an Apple Macintosh computer to the Babson network?

Yes. Macintosh users may connect to the Babson network. Be sure to define your TCP/IP control panel for connect via Ethernet and configure using DHCP server. This will allow you to access the Internet over the Babson network. ITSD does not support access to other network resources with a Macintosh.

How do I obtain an IP address on my PC or information appliance?

Your IP address is automatically assigned by the Internet service provider to which you connect. For example, if you connect your PC or appliance to an Ethernet network jack on the Babson campus, your IP address is automatically assigned by Babson's DHCP server. The following table describes the source from which your IP address is assigned:

If your PC or appliance is located here…AND your Internet connection method is… THEN, your IP address is assigned by this source…

IP Address Assignment Rule:

Users connected to the Babson on-campus Ethernet network must configure their workstations to obtain an IP address from Babson's DHCP server. Manual configuration of your IP address is not permitted, except only by prior written approval from ITSD. ITSD reserves the right to immediately terminate, without notice, the network connection to any device found to be out of compliance with ITSD's Acceptable Use Policy.

How do I get a fixed (static) IP address on the Babson network?

Fixed (static) IP addresses are issued by ITSD for approved academic projects only. To obtain a fixed IP address, provide the following information to the sponsoring faculty member, and request they forward the information to the IT Service Center:

  • Name and phone number of sponsoring Babson faculty member,
  • Reason why a fixed IP address is required (project description),
  • Workstation or appliance type (PC, MAC, other),
  • Operating system (Windows 2000, Unix, Linux, other),
  • MAC address of Ethernet network interface card,
  • Building name and room number where workstation is installed, and
  • Name of person accepting responsibility for transactions.

Babson reserves the right to reject any request for a fixed IP address, and to interrupt and/or terminate network service to any device found to be using a non-approved static IP address.

How do I get a DNS (domain name service) entry for my device on the Babson network?

DNS entries (machinename.babson.edu) are issued by ITSD for approved academic projects only. DNS requests may be made by faculty members only, using the same procedure as shown above for static IP addresses. The following information is required:

  • Name of requestor and role at Babson, (must be a faculty member),
  • Static IP address, and
