Environmental Sustainability Babson’s energy efficiency effort has been ongoing for more than 20 years. However, with the recent dramatic increases in energy prices and our increased focus on sustainability, we aggressively pursue efficiency opportunities in everything we do. As a community, we make every effort to conserve and effectively manage energy and natural resources. To do this, we focus on: community involvement recycling and reducing waste education Climate Change On January 5, 2009, Babson's president Leonard Schlesinger signed the American College & University President's Climate Commitment. President's signing the commitment are pledging to become "Climate Neutral" and eliminate their campuses' greenhouse gas emissions over time. According to the Sightlines GreenLine report, Babson has already reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 4.5%. The GreenLine report can be viewed . To learn more about the commitment, please visit . Community Involvement Babson has a number of student organizations and cross functional committees working collectively to ensure that our sustainability goals are met. Founded in 2008, the Babson Sustainability Steering Committee (BSSC) was created to oversee a community-wide effort to reduce the College’s environmental impacts, preserve resources, and foster education around sustainability. Members of the BSSC include: -
Charlie Anderson, Associate VP, Human Resources -
Shahid Ansari, Provost and Dean of Faculty -
Bob Fogel, Executive VP and Executive Dean -
Shelley Kaplan, Associate VP, Facilities Management and Planning -
Maureen Lederhos, Director, Marketing Programs and Brand Operations -
Toni Lester, Professor, Law -
Andy Moutinho, Assistant Director Trades and Technical Services -
Mary Rose, VP Administration and CIO -
Peter Russo, Director of Procurement The BSSC provides leadership to five targeted sub-committees made up of faculty, staff, and students. These sub-committees focus on specific areas including transportation (10 members); energy, climate change and green buildings (17 members); research, curriculum and social responsibility (10 members); education, communications, and awareness (8 members); and purchasing (8 members). Through collaboration with Babson’s Facilities Management and Planning Department, student organizations like the Green Tower and the Babson Energy and Environmental Club lead Babson’s charge to promote renewable energy technologies. As part of this effort, the club spearheaded an effort to utilize wind energy through the installation of a small wind power turbine on campus. The unit is located on the upper athletic field where it takes advantage of the most favorable wind conditions on Babson’s campus. Additionally, the student organizations sponsored competitions such as the Dark Dorm contest encourage energy conservation in the residence halls. The winners are the residence halls that reduce their energy and water use by the greatest percentage from last year. Prizes have included a pizza party for the winner each month and a grand prize, worth up to $4,000, to the residence hall with the overall greatest percent reduction. Putney Hall was our most recent winner—and they have a nice new flat screen TV in the main lounge that they bought with the winnings! Recycling and Reducing Waste Residence halls, office buildings, common areas, and dining facilities are all outfitted with recycling bins; blue is for paper and green is for cans and bottles. Babson currently recycles: Education Outreach to the Babson community is achieved in many ways and every vehicle is designed to increase awareness and create cultural change.
