Waiver Exam Information For students who feel they have mastered the subject material in a given core requirement subject and would thus not benefit from taking the course, we offer waiver exams.
Waiver Exams may be taken during the first semester that a student is enrolled in the Evening Program.
Here you will find a complete listing of the waiver exams administered for the Evening MBA program. Also, you will see syllabi associated with each exam. Please note, everything on the syllabi will not necessarily be on the exams. They are for you to use as a guideline to help you determine if you are comfortable to sit for the waiver exams. Please be advised that the exams are pass/fail and you can sit for the exam only one time. All waivers are paper based (not online). And it is a minimum of three weeks before the results are available. This should be kept in mind when trying to plan your course schedule. Please come to Olin Hall, Suite 320 (Graduate Programs and Student Affairs) to take your exam. For cluster courses, you would need to pass both stand alone waivers in order to waive the cluster. For example, for MBA 8500, you would need to pass both the MOB 7010 and MIS 7500 waiver exams.
To schedule an exam:
If you have questions regarding the waiver exam process or would like to schedule an appointment to take a waiver exam, please email Laureen Lampert at llampert@babson.edu.
Waivers should be scheduled a week in advance. Waivers are administered as early as 9:00am and must be completed by 4:30pm (Monday through Friday). Please note, that if your more than thirty minutes late to your scheduled exam, it will be rescheduled to a later date.
WAIVER EXAMS
No notes or books allowed except where noted. The Academic Honesty and Integrity Policy is in effect for students taking waiver exams.
Syllabi/preparation materials for each waiver exam are available below.
ACC7000 - Financial Accounting Theory: 3 hours - May Use Calculator
The exam tests your knowledge of
- Purpose and format of each statement.
- How the 3 statements connect.
-How to prepare a statement of cash flows.
-Meaning and use of liquidity, profitability and risk ratios, including analysis and interpretation.
-Effects on statements and ratios of:
Ø Transactions
Ø Strategic decisions
Ø Alternative reporting methods:
In addition, the questions focus on the following topics: ·
-Inventories
- Fixed Assets – analysis of accounts, depreciation/amortization, and impairment
- Bonds and how they are priced
- Off Balance Sheet Financing, particularly leasing
The exam assumes you can calculate inventories, depreciation, bonds, and leases and also analyze the effects of these transactions on the three statements and ratios. For example, if we capitalize leases, how does that impact the three statements and leverage ratios? If we change the number of years' life for calculating depreciation, how does that impact net income, cash flows, and ratios? If we use LIFO vs. FIFO for calculating COGS and ending inventory, what ratios are affected and how does it change net income and cash flows? Finally, what do changes or differences in financial statements and ratios tell us (as outsiders) about a company’s transactions and managerial choices?
We do not use debits and credits in the course at Babson so no need to review that issue.
If you have taken an accounting course, you can use the text to prepare for the exam. The exam is closed book and no laptops are allowed. You may bring in two 8.5 X11 sheets of paper with notes, written on both sides (hence four SIDES of paper with notes) as well as your calculator. We provide you with the ratios as well as present value tables, but we assume you can use a business calculator for bonds and leases.
