Not sure about the difference between banking and investment management?
Investment management is the selection of (usually) publicly traded securities for the portfolios of retail investors (e.g. mutual funds) and/or institutions (e.g. pension funds). Broadly speaking, the principal client of an investment manager is the investor.
Investment banking is the underwriting/issuance of publicly traded securities (e.g. stocks and bonds) or the facilitation of mergers and acquisitions. Broadly speaking, the principal client of an investment banker is the issuing or merging corporation(s).
The distinction between investment management and investment banking is made somewhat murky by the fact that most investment banks also offer investment management services. For example, most also maintain broker/dealer operations, make markets for securities, and offer advisory services to investors. At the same time, the differences in cultures and responsibilities between investment companies and investment banks can distinctly affect the nature of the work.
