The Class (Entre les Murs) Director: Laurent Cantet (2008)
Winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, The Class is an absorbing journey into a multicultural high school in Paris over the course of a school year. François Begaudeau--an actual teacher and the author upon whose autobiographical book the film was based—plays himself, and an ensemble of young non-actors recreate the charged atmosphere of a classroom that is a microcosm of contemporary, culturally diverse France. Combining the suspense of a drama with the immediacy of a social documentary, The Class is a funny and moving look at adolescent lives and at an educational system to alternately inspires and alienates them.

Today the Hawk Takes One Chick Director: Jane Gillooly (2008)
*The director will be present to answer questions from the audience following the screening
Living with the highest prevalence of HIV and the lowest life expectancy in the world, three grandmothers in Swaziland, a small, landlocked country in southern Africa, cope with their plight. The generation between the grandmothers and their grandchildren has been severely affected by HIV. Today the Hawk Takes One Chick moves delicately among the lives of the grandmothers, whose experiences highlight a rural community at the threshold of simultaneous collapse and reinvention. Through the poignant perspective of these remarkable women, Today the Hawk Takes One Chick creates a portrait of a community by layering discrete moments in time. Presented without narration, the film's drama emerges from an accumulation of details that, in sum, tell a greater story of family, perseverance, and love in a world dictated by AIDS.

Volver Director: Pedro Almodovar (2006)
Winner of awards for best screenplay and actress (Penélope Cruz) at the Cannes Film Festival, Oscar-nominated Volver is Pedro Almodóvar at his best. Full of surprises and reversals, the action moves back and forth between a working class neighborhood in Madrid and a windswept village in the Spanish countryside as it draws us into the family dramas and buried secrets of three generations of women. Beyond its first-rate cast, the film’s murder/ghost story is riveting cinema. But Volver also touches on some of the more prevalent issues facing Spain today – domestic violence, the transformation of Spanish pueblos into ghost towns for senior citizens, a growing lower and often immigrant class struggling to scrape by in the urban center. Almodóvar’s exploration of these issues adds rich dimension to this story of loss, return and the possibility of forgiveness. As one New York Times review suggested “It draws you in, invites you to linger and makes you eager to return.”
Films will be screened in the Sorenson Center for the Arts at 7:00 p.m.
Each screening will include a brief introduction and a post-film discussion.
All film screenings are free and open to the public.

It’s a master work in every sense, and altogether her own."
