The Sorenson Center for the Arts at Babson College is pleased to present “Delicate Terrestrials” featuring sculpture by Deborah Baldizar and paintings by Maggie Connors. There is an ethereal quality to the work of both artists; everyday people are represented through marks and materials that remind us of the temporal nature of existence.

Deb Baldizar’s cast paper portraits of herself and her family are simultaneously ephemeral and tactile. The sculptures’ raised seams, evidence of the casting process, evoke auras or halos that set them apart from their surroundings. These textured edges suggest a physical connection to a previous context. The introspective gaze and self-contained gesture of each sculpture combines with the metaphors of the seams to endow each figure with a sense of personal history.

Maggie Connors’ early work evolved from action drawings composed of marks that traced the path of her body’s movements. Within those marks, she would find various figures and pull them to the surface. Her current paintings are based on photographs of friends, neighbors, and co-workers performing activities of daily life and sport: stretching, walking, standing on line, dancing, and bike riding. Personalities are made visible through the specific play and execution of a gesture. The expressive quality of the gestures and the subtly handled surfaces draws one in close to the work, creating a sense of intimacy as the viewer imagines getting to know these subjects.
