What is General Management?
A CEO is the ultimate General Manager; other examples of General Manager (GM) roles include executives leading business unit/geographic region. The responsibilities of a GM span across functional boundaries and include all aspects of a business – finance, marketing, operations, etc. Ultimately, GMs are responsible for driving the growth, profit and strategy for a business unit, function, or entire company. To be successful a GM must have excellent leadership skills as well as a broad set of technical, functional and industry knowledge.
Finance– Set financial performance goals and measure firm’s performance. Raise capital via effective investor relationships.
Marketing - manage salesforce to ensure top line growth and improved understanding of customer needs.
Operations - Drive continuous improvement efforts to improve cost positions.
Strategy - Develop vision for the organization. Design and implement strategic initiatives.
Staffing - Hire, retain and develop a talented workforce.
