Many aspects of working in an office are beyond any one person’s control, and are based on large and infrequent purchases, such as what type of furniture or paint is used to decorate the office. However, everyday you make dozens of decisions that have a sustainability impact. Here are some tips to help make a sustainable choice:

Reducing your waste is the fastest and most sustainable practice. Where possible and practical, share documents digitally through Babson’s scan and send program, or print double-sided when paper copies are necessary. Avoid K-Cup-type products, as they produce waste that is not recyclable or compostable.
Babson’s Facilities team is working to make campus infrastructure as energy efficient as possible, but leaving energy-efficient appliances on when not in use is still wasteful. Always turn off lights and projectors when not in use, and power down computers when away from your desk for more than a few hours.
In today’s online and digital office, much of the waste that offices produce are food-related. Using reusable mugs and glasses, for coffee, tea, and water can quickly cut packing waste in an office. Choosing reusable containers for meals also will slash packaging.
Coffee and tea are commonly consumed in offices, and responsibly sourcing them is an important sustainability practice. At Babson, we are thousands of miles away from coffee and tea production, so third party certifications are a good tool for ensuring sustainable production. For both coffee and tea, look for products that are:

- Certified Organic
- Rainforest Alliance Certified
These certifications ensure that workers have healthy working conditions and that the natural environment is protected during the growing and harvesting process.
