Taking Advantage of Every Opportunity
Will Hallock ’14 / Boulder, Colorado
“In high school, I thought I had everything figured out: I was going to go to business school and become a management consultant upon graduation. Babson was an especially appealing destination for me because, like most first-year students, I was excited to develop and run my own business through the Foundations of Management and Entrepreneurship (FME) course.
“There isn’t a doubt in my mind that my experiences at Babson prepared me to hit the ground running at Amazon.”
“However, what Babson gave me went far beyond my FME experience. I was accepted into the Babson Honors Program, which presented me the unique opportunity to study and work abroad during a summer in London. Over the course of that summer, I had an internship in the financial services industry, studied at the London School of Economics, and was able to experience what it is like to live in London—I even attended the Olympics!
"While at Babson, I learned more about consulting through case discussions in my classes, my Management Consulting Field Experience (MCFE) project, and my summer consulting internship at KPMG. However, the Babson community empowers students to explore their interests inside and outside the classroom, so I felt inspired to test out other potential career paths.
“My plan was to concentrate in strategic management, but I also took marketing and information technology classes I was interested in. Through these classes, I was able to discover my passion for data analytics and research. This led to my honors thesis on social media user engagement and its implications on marketing communications. As part of my research, I was able to travel to San Francisco and New York to interview industry professionals at Facebook, Google, and LinkedIn, and I ended up being invited to present my findings at the Academy of Marketing Science's Annual Conference.
“The support and guidance of the Center for Career Development (CCD) helped me secure my current position (brand specialist at Amazon.com), and there isn’t a doubt in my mind that my experiences at Babson prepared me to hit the ground running at Amazon. Babson’s unique balance of theoretical background and practical business application enables graduates to understand what they will face in the real world. Everything I experienced at Babson developed my focus on taking action and crafted the strategic and analytical mindset that I embody at work.
"My time as an undergraduate provided me with invaluable personal development: I found myself, my best friends, and my home at Babson, and that will always be with me. Whether it was as an FME mentor, a Resident Assistant, or a member of the cross country and track teams, the experiences I had at Babson all contributed to where I am today."
