Putting in the Effort, Reaping the Rewards
Melanie Jordan ’16 / Westford, Massachusetts
“I am certain that anywhere I go the knowledge I have gained at my internship will be a valuable asset to me.”
“I chose Babson because it focuses on giving its students the tools to gain real work experience both in school and out.
“But, I realized early on that it’s on me to put in the extra effort needed to take advantage of all the opportunities Babson offers. The work I put into my classes allowed me to earn grades that then helped me secure internships both this summer and next.
“Emails from the Center for Career Development definitely helped me explore my options for internships. They have a lot of great information in them, and I made sure to take the time to read them over, sort through opportunities, and pursue the right ones. Those emails are how I found out about the General Electric Freshman Discovery Program. I received guidance on my résumé from a career advisor and then applied to the program. It felt good to see my efforts really translate into rewards when I got the internship.
“As a marketing intern at Vision Advertising this summer, my internship was entirely focused on Internet- and media-based marketing. I have always said I wanted a career that is constantly changing and challenging me to think in new ways. Even within the two-month time frame of my internship, Facebook added hashtags. This was a seemingly small change to most users, but it affected the entirety of our Facebook advertising strategies and optimization for our clients.
“Throughout my internship, I was shocked at how much I knew simply from my introductory courses; I was way ahead compared to students from other schools. Babson prepared me to work hard, so I knew that the information I lacked I could easily learn on my own.
“My power to change the world lies in my ability to change myself. In every moment, I’m trying to choose thoughts, feelings, words, and actions that are more creative than destructive, more compassionate than condemning, more uplifting than defeating.
“As someone who also has an interest in entrepreneurship and beginning my own company, I feel that I have also gained important insight in how to use online marketing tools for a startup. I learned how to use Facebook properly to build a media campaign, how to write optimized blogs to draw target traffic to websites, how to optimize websites, how to create media lists, and how to build email lists through various platforms. Small companies can hugely benefit by gaining a strong online presence, so I am certain that anywhere I go the knowledge I have gained will be a valuable asset to me.”
