 Basic StepsSelect the Search FULL TEXT to do an Article or Full Text search.
- Use the Article search to retrieve articles on a particular subject.
- Use the Full Text search to search for every instance of a particular subject.
- Enter your search terms and select a search mode. (See Advanced Searching below for more information on searching and search modes.)
- Enable or disable highlighting and explanations.
- Click on the Search icon.
Note: Search terms do not need to be case specific or contain foreign characters; however the Dictionary does use British spelling. Select the Browse icon to browse through an alphabetical listing of article titles. To search images select external image links where you can search the image database; or once you are in an article select Bridgeman. |
Advanced Search Tips
The Dictionary offers three search modes in the Article Search and Full Text Search:
- Concept Search matches synonymous words or words relating in meaning or form. For example a search for the word state will bring up province, country, and land.
- Pattern Search looks for alternative spellings.
- Boolean Search searches exact matches and allows for Boolean operators.

Viewing, Printing & Saving Options
Use the "Print this Page" and "Email this Page" icons that appear on each article page. Citation information is included at the bottom of the printed or emailed article. Please note, when using these icons, users must print/email each page individually. |
