Guide for Parents As parents, you are an essential partner in support of your student's career development. Below are several suggestions for how you might support your student with his/her career and professional growth. - Encourage your student to enroll in a broad array of courses as a way to gain knowledge about a variety of fields.
- Support your student's interest to become involved in campus organizations and athletics and to assume leadership roles.
- Express interest in your student's coursework and co-curricular activities.
- Suggest that your student talk with a career advisor or faculty to learn more about fields of interest, concentrations, and potential career choices.
- Advise your student to talk with family, friends, and colleagues in their field as a way to establish valuable contacts and to learn more about industry trends and job responsibilities.
- Encourage your student to visit the Center for Career Development and to attend career programs sponsored by the office.
- Encourage your student to secure internships or part-time jobs while enrolled in school.
- Listen to your student. Do not make decisions for him/her about their career options. Provide advice not answers.
